Lauched from Potash with the pick-up at upper Spanish Bottom. Campsites were at river mile 41 sandbar, river mile 37, Lathrop Canyon, Indian Creek Canyon, river mile 6, and upper Spanish Bottom. Day hikes were at Musselman Canyon, Indian Creek Canyon, and Spanish Bottom. Boats were a Sevylor SVX200, SeaEagle 395, and a JPW Cutthroat II." txtary[5]="Gila River in the spring of 2005 was a three-day solo float and excellent water flow (510 CFS). This is a remote section of river known as the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area. A twenty two mile stretch of water that the BLM estimates sees five hundred paddlers in a year. Put-in was at the old Safford Bridge with take-out at Dry Canyon. Campsites were at the Gillard Hot Springs and at river mile 16. Major tributaries were the San Francisco River and Eagle Creek. The only day hike was at the Hot Springs. Paddle craft was a AIRE Tomcat tandem." txtary[6]="San Juan River in the spring of 2005 was a nine day, three-person float with light to heavy winds and adequate water flow. Launch was at Montezuma Creek with Clay Hills Crossing serving as the take-out. 102 miles in nine days made for a fairly intense trip. Making up the flotilla were a Jacks Cutthroat II, NRS SurfCat, and a Wenonah Rogue. Major day hikes occurred at six miles above Sand Island, River House Ruin, Honaker Trail, Slickhorn Canyon, and Oljeto Canyon. Launch was at Clarno Bridge with the takeout at Cottonwood Bridge. 69 miles in 6 days was easy at this flow. Craft were a Sevylor SVX200 IK, a JPW Cutthroat II, and a NRS Surf Cat. Major days hikes were at river mile 101, river mile 91, and at Owl Rock. This trip, at least for myself, was a huge logistical effort. Launch was at Sand Island with the takeout at Mexican Hat for a total of 26 miles. Craft was a Jack's Plastic Welding Cutthroat II. Major day hikes were at Mule Ear Diatreme and Chinle Wash. It was much more a day-hiking, ruin-seeking trip than a typical river adventure." txtary[9]="Lake Powell in the fall of 2002 was a scheduled eight-day solo paddle. This has been the only trip I've done that weather essentially canceled. Spent four days at two unplanned campsites while waiting out wind and thunderstorms. Launch and takeout were at Antelope Point with a total of ~30 miles paddled instead of the expected 120 miles. Craft was a kevlar Perception Corona kayak. Major day hikes were at Padre Point and Navajo Canyon as were the campsites." txtary[10]="Verde River in the spring of 2006 was a five-day solo whitewater paddle. My most ambitious yet. NRS Bandit II was the abused craft and it's light weight helped immensely. Flow was minimal at 200 CFS but caused no excessive hardships. Weather was freezing in the early morning in the high elevations but pleasant the rest of the day. Beasley Flat was the launch and Horseshoe Dam the exit. There were no hikes, breaks, layovers, or naval-gazing this trip. Camps were at Palisades Cliff, PowerLine #2, River Mile 121, and Sheep Bridge." txtary[11]="San Juan River in the spring of 2006 was an eight-day combination float/car-camp with decent weather and low flow. Launch was at Sand Island with the takeout at Mexican Hat for a total of 26 miles. Craft were a JPW Cutthroat II, NRS SurfCat, Wenonah Rogue, and a Wenonah Argosy. Goals of the trip were exploration of Butler Wash, Chinle Wash, and Comb Ridge. Chinle Wash was exceptional in opportunities. Only 9 miles covered in the first 5 days as the campsites at Butler Wash and Mule Ear were essentially trailheads." txtary[12]="Always been intrigued by the size and variety of lizards to be found near the San Juan River. No rapids as such, but many, many strainers, a couple whom ranged into the nasty category. I calculated 21 miles but everyone else seems to peg the length at 15 miles. It was a two-person, six-day trip with low water and changing weather. Launch and take-out were the standard Sand Wash and Swasey's Landing locations. Craft were a Wenonah Rogue and JPW Cutthroat frame on NRS cataraft tubes. No extended day-hikes or explorations occurred. Campsites were at 76.7 camp, Fretwater Falls, Lower Three Canyon, Above Wire Fence, and Above Rattlesnake Rapid. There were no layover days." txtary[16]="The Gila River through the Aldo Leopold Wilderness area is seldom run and has been on my list for some time. Flow, weather, shuttle, and time must overlap for it to happen and they rarely do. Two email companions and I teamed up for the 4-day, 40-mile adventure. None of us had done this stretch before and it was into the unknown as far as rapids, campsites, or hazards were concerned. Launch and take-out were the East Fork Bridge and Box Canyon Campground. Craft were IK's: a 14 foot Soar, AIRE Lynx II, and a Tomcat II. The only day-hike was at Sycamore Canyon. Campsites were at Sycamore Canyon, River Mile 21, and River Mile 34. There were no layover days." txtary[17]="Rio Chama River in the spring of 2007 was a three-day solo trip using a JPW Cutthroat frame with NRS Surf Cat tubes. Flow is controlled by the Bureau of Reclamation via the El Vado dam. Bureau managers stated there would be 'plenty' of water and the flow was excellent at 1700 CFS. Temperatures were perfect with dramatic thunderstorms appearing each afternoon, including a large hailstorm. Entry/exit were standard at El Vado Ranch and Big Eddy. Camps were at Aragon and River Mile 17.4 as were the day-hikes." txtary[18]="In 2007, for the first time in several years, there were no large expedition-type trips. Instead the year was dedicated to exploring various sections of the Gila River, both as day and short multi-day trips. It was the 'Year of the Gila'. Which was the case for most of my co-workers and their familes shown here. No rapids to speak of but moving water and better scenery than can be expected from the Mesa city limits. With the right lighting and if off the water before the tubers arrive, it's nearly like being on a real river." txtary[20]="Colorado and Santa Elena canyons in Big Bend are often referred to as the Upper Canyons of the Rio Grande. With excellent flows supporting larger craft, a very short notice float covering 5 days and 43 miles was organized. Two person trip utilizing an AIRE Tomcat IK and a JPW Cutthroat frame on NRS Surfcat tubes. Camps were at Rancherias, Maderia, Metate, Entrance Rapid, and Fern Canyon. Hikes were at Closed Canyon, Rockslide overlook, and Fern Canyon. Santa Elena shined as world class with much of the rest very similar to what is paddled locally.
