Colorado River - Grand Canyon - Diamond Creek to Pearce Ferry - Part II

On day 2, Father Patrick said Mass below Travertine Falls and we had our only hot breakfast of the trip. Father Patrick and Maya swam at 231 mile rapid (5). Father Patrick avoided the rock on the right, but then went into the hole on the left at the bottom and flipped there. After an unpleasant swim, Ted towed him to the left bank and I pushed his IK over, but was not able to flip it by myself from my kayak. Then Maya came down the rapid out of her boat after flipping at the rock on the right. I pulled her to the raft and to her IK. At 232 mile rapid (Killer Fang Falls, 6) we scouted and all decided to enter right and then pulled left to avoid the fang. I eddied out on the right above the fang and then left the eddy doing an upstream ferry to get by the fang on the left. I thought about going right around the fang, but decided the current would not take me there. Father Patrick, Hartley, Ted, and Gene did well with flawless runs at 232. Michelle counted coup on the fang as a tribute to Bessie Hyde by pitonning into the fang and then flipped as she went around on the left, but said it was not a bad swim. Ted paddled up to help her, gave her some reassurance, and steadied her boat while Michelle reboarded. Michelle reboarded successfully each time she swam, which she had been practicing in the pool. Maya started too far right at 232 and went for shore when a rock got in her way. At that point, she decided to portage, but had a hard time moving the loaded IK along the steep rocky bank above the swift water. Eventually I hike up and ran the bottom half of the rapid in the Bandit. Leslie took over Maya's IK after that and Maya rode in the raft. We found 234 mile rapid (5) to be very nice with big waves. We ran it down the middle to avoid holes on the right. (The guide book said not to run it left.) That was our favorite rapid. I also liked the unnamed s-turn rapid below that. Leslie did well for her first time in an IK running 234 mile rapid with it's huge waves and the rapid below. We camped at Spencer that night. It is a nice camp, but the pit toilet was closed and kangaroo rats ate into two or three of our dry bags, including one right next to me and one inside Gene and Lucy's tent.
