Salt River - May 5, 2010 - First Campground to Highway 188 - Part IV

We kept the food fairly simple for this trip with hamburgers and potato salad the first night, chili and cheese crisp the second night, and hot dogs the third night, with deli meat sandwiches for lunches. It was nice to have less work for meal prep than the Grand Canyon trip, but one hot breakfast, and a few melons and other fruit would have been nice. I brought some oranges which I enjoyed. I need to find a way to pack snacks so that they are more accessible. It took me longer to pack my boat than I thought it should have. I got better as the trip went on, but I need to get more organized.

We have also thought about doing Gleason to Horseshoe (19 miles). It may be possible to do this in a day in kayaks if you set up the shuttle the day before. Even then, it would be nice to have a shuttle driver, but you would have to be sure the shuttle driver could get to the take out. Two days would be better.

I found three maps and descriptions for this section. Michelle looked at them in the raft. Tom had one set laminated, and was able to view it from his IK, which was a good idea. Jorge also had a map. Jerry had a GPS and had the coordinates of the rapids stored on it. Jerry provided this data from his GPS: Wednesday 5/5/10 Launch @ 1:50pm, Camp @ 4:50pm (may have launched a few minuets earlier, my gps started below Kiss-Tell); Thursday 5/6/10 Launch @ 9:03am, Camp @ 5:12pm , 1:06 hrs at Canyon Creek; Friday 5/7/10 Launch @ 8:12am, Camp @ 4:50pm , 1:28 hrs at Cherry Creek; Saturday 5/8/10 Launch @ 9:14am, Take out @ 11:11pm. It was 54.4 miles with eddy’s etc.,and this breaks down to: Wednesday: 10.5 Miles; Thursday: 15.1 Miles; Friday: 20.4 Miles; and Saturday: 8.4 Miles. When he removed eddies and back tracking, Jerry got: Day 1 = 10.5 miles; Day 2 = 14 miles; Day 3 = 20.8 miles; and Day 4 = 8.3 miles, for a TOTAL 53.6 miles.
